There is a growing movement which is known as Health At Every Size.  One of the basic ideas behind it is that healthy behaviors are for Every Body!  Making nutritional choices that benefit one's body and health, as well as exercising, moving our bodies in ways that are fun and health-promoting, are things that benefit everyone.

With the insane focus on body size in our culture, a lot of people miss out on healthy behaviors -- both fat and thin alike.  Thin people often think they don't need to exercise or be mindful of what they eat because, hey -- they're already thin -- and for many people, that equates to being healthy.  That is simply not the case.  Body size is not a proxy for health.  Fat people are often discouraged from exercise and movement, particularly if it does not lead to weight loss for them.  The fact is, however, that exercise benefits our health even if it doesn't change our weight.  And eating nutritious food is something that can give us more energy and make us feel well no matter what size we are!

Too often, when people pursue a healthy lifestyle in order to lose weight, they become discouraged when the weight comes back (as it almost always -- 95-98% of the time) does within two years.  Then they stop their healthy behaviors.  This is very sad because those healthy behaviors are good for us no matter what size we are!  For more information on this, please see my book list -- there are links to books such as The Obesity Myth and Big Fat Lies -- books which go into much more detail about the facts of this.

One more comment I'd like to make:  it is wonderful to have every resource available to us to live our lives in the best, most wonderful ways that we can.   That does not mean that in order to have human worth -- and our complete civil rights -- that we must take advantage of all of the resources available.  A person who chooses not to exercise is still a human being with full human worth.  There is no excuse, ever, to be cruel to anybody, regardless of the personal choices they make on how to live their own lives and manage their own bodies.  We don't need to be judging how each other lives -- whether we exercise, what we eat, how our bodies are shaped, how healthy we are.  Good health is a gift -- that is often independent of how we take care of ourselves.  Good health is something to be grateful for every day.  I know lots of people who have taken wonderful care of themselves and still have been stricken with cancer or other catastrophic diseases and illnesses.  I also know people who haven't taken care of themselves at all -- at least not according to conventional wisdom -- and they have lived long, healthy lives.  We all know examples of this.  We must not judge people who suffer from poor health, whether we believe they caused it or not.  Every Body deserves compassion and kindness.

The Health at Every Size resources are important, wonderful resources.  Every Body deserves the right to have these resources available to them.  Keeping a focus on weight and body size/shape takes away the availability of these resources to lots of people.  So, enjoy healthy behaviors that make sense to you -- and live the best, happiest, healthiest life you choose, and are able, to live!
